05/01/2016 (day #115)

Yesterday, after a short 4 hour drive from Puebla, we arrived into San Miguel de Allende. San Miguel is a beautiful town full of artists and colonial architecture. We spent the afternoon walking the historic center. The center is blocked off for pedestrians, which makes walking much easier and more pleasant.  The streets are narrow, so we left the car at our house.  In a couple of day, we will leave for Laredo, Texas. Laredo should be around 9 hours by toll road.  The Mexican toll roads are very nice and generally equivalent to our interstates at home being four lane and relatively straight. There is much less traffic on the toll roads also, as they are fairly expensive. A day on the toll roads will generally cost us $50-$75.  The alternative is to take the free roads, which are two lane, choked with slow moving trucks and wind through towns full of speed bumps.

Once we cross into Texas, we will have completed 11 border crossings through 6 countries.

We are currently in Villahermosa, Mexico heading north to Puebla in the morning.

The first night out of Nicaragua , we stayed in Tegucigalpa. The capital of Honduras. Tegucigalpa is a city of a couple of million.  There is a lot of slash and burning clearing going on right now, and despit traveling Honduras from South to North, we saw very little of it because of all the smoke from one end to the other.  We did stop and see the Mayan ruins in Copan which were very nice. This was a Mayan city for 16 generations before being abandoned for a Migration to Tikal.

We only spent one day in Honduras and really felt like we couldn't leave fast enough.

We then stayed in Chiquimula, Guatemala in the same hotel as the way south. This is the town we visited the circus at on the way south.

Last night we stayed at a wonderful jungle resort called Las Lagunas near Flores, Guatemala.  This morning we took their spider monkey tour, which was well worth our time.  So far, our trip north has been pretty easy with uneventful border crossings.
